Subways frequently provide an opportunity for bespoke creative and imaginative solutions, resulting in improvements to the local environment.

A1 Hartley Avenue

This installation was completed using both cut tile and overglazing. The twenty handpainted planet panels were interspersed with stars and constellations. The theme was chosen due to the proximity of a local observatory.

The mix of cut, printed and hand painted tile, originally proposed as a compromise to stay on budget, resulted in a rich surface texture far beyond the expectations of the client.

The colours and theme have brightened this once vandal plagued subway to become an area enjoyed by the community and even used by schools as an educational tool.

Faringdon Bridge Tube Station Stairwell

The curved stairwell wall was the site for a large panel copy of an engraving of Holborn Viaduct.

The original bromide artwork was enlarged photographically to preserve the quality of the etched line even at the final panel size of 8.7m x 4.8m.

The design was applied by transfer so that the design went to the edge of each tile and preserved the continuity of the design.

Once completed each tile was labelled back and front and each box was clearly labelled with its contents. The fixers had a grid reference chart and despite the size of the panel, fixing was a straight forward process.

Spare transfers were held to ensure that any replacements due to breakage could be supplied quickly and without any shade variance.
